California Governor Gavin Newsom signaled on Sunday that he would seriously weigh a presidential run after the 2026 midterm elections take place.
Newsom was asked whether he would give “serious thought” to a White House campaign once the nation’s attention shifts beyond next year’s contests.
“Yeah, I’d be lying otherwise,” he said, according to CBS News.
His current term ends in January 2027, and California’s term-limit laws prevent him from seeking another governorship.
According to a September YouGov poll, Newsom is the favorite to win the Democratic nomination. He has a one-point lead over former Vice President and California Senator Kamala Harris. The poll shows respondents also view those candidates as the two most “ideal” candidates at 21 percent and 17 percent, respectively.
The others that rounded out the top five from this poll were Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY-14), former Biden official Pete Buttigieg, and Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT).
Harris, who recently released a new book, in a recent interview said she has not ruled out another presidential run.
“I am not done,” Harris told the outlet. “I have lived my entire career as a life of service and it’s in my bones.”
